An exceptional vintage Japanese smoking set dating to the early 1950s, distinguished by its elaborate phoenix motifs, sculptural floral detailing, and beautifully contrasting silver- and gold-tone finishes.
Acquired by my uncle in occupied Japan during the Korean War, this striking ensemble represents the decorative artistry of Japan’s postwar period.
The coordinated set features an ornate rectangular serving tray with integrated handles, a covered cigarette compartment, a central table lighter, and a matching ashtray. Each element is embellished with intricate raised blossoms, scrolling foliage, and finely detailed ornamental designs.
The magnificent gilded phoenix, a traditional Japanese symbol of prosperity, harmony, and good fortune, provides a dramatic focal point. Particularly noteworthy is the decorative engraving on the undersides of the individual components, reflecting the attention to detail throughout the ensemble.
The original lighter remains fully functional, an especially desirable feature for collectors of vintage smoking accessories.
The underside bears a distinctive diamond-shaped maker’s mark, offering an additional point of interest for collectors of Japanese decorative metalwork. The manufacturer has not yet been definitively identified.
A handsome example of midcentury Japanese design, equally compelling as a collectible smoking set or a sophisticated decorative accent for a library, gentleman’s study, cocktail lounge, or curated interior.
