An important African carved wooden mask of the Kifwebe type, associated with the sculptural tradition of the Songye people, Democratic Republic of Congo. A piece of strong sculptural presence, distinguished by the high quality of the carving and the particularly careful execution of the characteristic striated pattern, an essential element of the visual language of Kifwebe masks. The surface presents numerous parallel striations, deeply incised and of great regularity, symmetrically arranged around the main elements of the face. The design follows the anatomy of the mask, forming arches above the eyes and diagonal lines on the cheeks and lower area, creating a graphic effect of great strength and rhythm. The face is dominated by a long, prominent central nose, of geometric construction and pronounced projection, flanked by large, half-closed, fully hollow eyes. The mouth, also hollow, has a prominent quadrangular shape, giving great expressiveness to the composition. The polychromy preserves ancient shades of black, red/ochre, white, and earthy tones, distributed among the different striations and facial elements. The chromatic alternation, now softened by time and wear, reinforces the three-dimensional reading of the carving and contributes significantly to the visual character of the piece. The reverse is deeply excavated to accommodate the face, with openings corresponding to the eyes and mouth, demonstrating the conception of the piece as a mask that is effectively usable and not merely a decorative element. It also features small peripheral holes, compatible with fastening systems or the application of complementary elements. The mask has a robust construction and considerable volume. The carving work reveals technical mastery, especially in the extraordinary regularity of the striations, the symmetry of the composition, and the way these accompany and accentuate the volumes of the face.
