Country of origin: France, probably. Period: Late 19th/early 20th century, circa 1890–1920. Style: Animalistic / Late Napoleon III. Material: Patinated bronze and gilded bronze. Technique: Hollow casting, chiseling and two-tone finish. Measurements of each sculpture: 22 × 46 × 20 cm. Signature or mark: Not identified. Imposing pair of sculptures representing two reclining lions arranged symmetrically. The animals, in gilded bronze, exhibit naturalistic modeling, well-defined musculature and abundantly chiseled manes. They rest on irregular rocky bases in bronze with a very dark brown patina, creating an expressive two-tone contrast. The composition belongs to the European tradition of animal sculpture developed in France during the 19th century, revealing the influence of models popularized by sculptors such as Antoine-Louis Barye, although without direct attribution.
