A colorful Chinese porcelain teapot paired with a fitted woven warming basket, bringing together intricate decoration and the warmth of natural basketry.
The cylindrical porcelain body features an iron-red dragon and a multicolored phoenix, framed by turquoise key-fret borders and stylized waves. Twin red-covered metal handles and a recessed lid with oval finger openings complete its distinctive silhouette. The basket opens to reveal patterned fabric lining and a shaped recess accommodating the spout.
An appealing ensemble for a collected interior, equally suited to a dining-room cabinet, kitchen dresser, or display of Chinese porcelain.
History & Provenance
Acquired from an estate collection. The accompanying estate sale description identified the ensemble as a “Fine Antique Chinese Cylindrical Porcelain Teapot with Wicker Carrying/Warming Basket Painted in Jingdezhen.” The precise production date and maker are unknown.
Designer Notes
Display the teapot beside its open basket to reveal the contrast between colorful porcelain, woven texture, and patterned textiles. Particularly effective with blue-and-white ceramics, dark wood furniture, or brass accents in traditional, chinoiserie, and collected country interiors.
