Recently evaluated by a professional antiques appraiser, who identified the piece as:
“An American Empire carved and veneered mahogany scrolled-end sofa, probably Mid-Atlantic, circa 1830s.”

The sofa features a scrolled and carved back tablet flanked by serpentine rails, tall out-scrolling ends, and a substantial front rail raised on two distinctive carved winged paw feet. Later cream-colored damask upholstery with two matching bolster cushions.

Provenance: We purchased the sofa approximately 16 years ago from an estate in Virginia, and it has remained in our family home since.

The sofa presents beautifully and remains a striking example of early American Classical/Empire furniture. It has age-related condition issues consistent with a piece approaching 200 years old, including some splits and separations in the mahogany veneer, as shown in the photographs.

We would particularly like to see this historic piece go to someone who appreciates antique American furniture and will enjoy preserving it for its next chapter. See less
