A handsome combination of Cartier craftsmanship and American numismatic history, this circa 1940s sterling silver catchall dish is an exceptionally appealing accessory for a dresser, desk, bedside table, or library.
The shallow circular bowl is crafted in sterling silver with a clean, understated profile that allows the centerpiece to command attention: an authentic 1885-O Morgan Silver Dollar, mounted into the center of the dish. The coin has a naturally circulated surface, giving it wonderful character and creating an attractive contrast against the polished sterling silver.
The Morgan Dollar was designed by U.S. Mint engraver George T. Morgan and originally struck from 1878 through 1904, returning for one final year in 1921. Its obverse depicts Liberty in profile, while the reverse carries the American eagle. The original coins were composed of 90% silver and 10% copper. United States Mint
The “O” mint mark identifies this 1885 example as having been struck at the historic New Orleans Mint. New Orleans began producing Morgan Dollars in 1879 and continued through 1904. The branch mint itself has a fascinating history, having originally opened in 1838 and later resumed coinage operations following the Civil War. United States Mint
The dish measures approximately 4 inches wide, 4 inches deep and 1 inch high, with a substantial total weight of 90 grams. What elevates this piece considerably is its maker: the underside is marked “Cartier Sterling,” marrying one of the great names in luxury goods with one of America's most recognizable historic silver coins. Good vintage condition with light surface wear. The coin has tarnish and aged surface. Please review the photos for further condition assessment.
Beautifully suited for holding rings, cufflinks, collar stays, coins or other small personal objects, it also displays wonderfully simply as a decorative object.
