A beautifully stylized, highly decorative late 20th-century Balinese modernist wood carving capturing the divine bridal embrace of Prince Rama and Princess Sita from the sacred Ramayana epic. Standing 11½ inches tall with an 8¼-inch width and a 3¼-inch depth profile, this sculpture is masterfully chiseled from a solid block of premium tropical Suar wood, showcasing a pristine, uniform warm caramel heartwood complexion and smooth surface planes that emphasize the bright, clean aesthetic of modern contemporary Balinese studio craft.
The figures are beautifully composed in a kneeling posture, exhibiting an extraordinary level of high-relief graphic detail across their intricate, tiered ceremonial crowns, cascading hair lines, and detailed sashes (sabuk). The flowing contours of their traditional attire are carved with smooth, confident precision, maximizing the timber's natural grain channels to create a striking sense of three-dimensional movement from every angle. This independent sculpture stands in completely pristine, flawless vintage condition with absolutely zero structural hairline cracks, chips, splits, or repairs.
Curatorial Note: This piece was hand-carved by the same master studio hand as our companion 10½-inch Janger Dancer (Listing ID # Available on Store) [user, Other Claims]. While it stands alone as a powerful statement artwork, they display beautiful design harmony when displayed as a theatrical performance group.
