A splendid pair of Monroe chairs (also known as Marlyn chair), an icon of post modern design by renowned Japanese architect Arata Isozaki in 1972.
The Monroe is characterized by its sculptural design: the 55 1/4" high slatted backrest is designed to appear geometric from the front and sinuous in profile a tribute to Marlyn Monroe's curves.
The frame is made of black lacquered beech wood; the lacquer is applied so as to allow the natural grain of the wood to b e slightly visible (known as "ebonized black") the original upholstered seats are black leather.
The chairs were created for use in the executive offices of a Japanese bank and are in the collection. of the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
The chairs are in great condition, with the padding still taut and meticulously finished. There is spacer to hold one back slat straight.
