An original black-and-white work by Catalan artist Jordi Curós (1930–2017), signed and dated 1965 at the lower right. Figures gathered along an ornate balcony are rendered in expressive linework and bold passages of black, framed by shuttered openings and scrolling ironwork. A striking tonal reversal across the center gives the composition a distinctive graphic rhythm.
Presented under glass with cream double matting and a gold-tone frame, this evocative figurative work brings contrast and architectural interest to a collected interior.
About the Artist
Born in Olot, Spain, Curós studied at the city’s art school and later worked in Paris. His career encompassed abstraction and figurative painting, with a renewed focus on figuration during the 1960s. He held his first solo exhibition at Barcelona’s Sala Parés in 1965 and received the Ynglada-Guillot drawing prize in 1967. His work is represented in the Fundació Vila Casas collection.
Designer Notes
The monochromatic palette offers a striking counterpoint to warm wood furniture, patterned textiles, and collected antiques. Place above a writing desk or console, or incorporate into a gallery wall alongside portraits and architectural studies. Particularly suited to Ralph Lauren–inspired rooms, English country interiors, and traditional maximalist spaces. Replacement framing in ebonized wood or a restrained antique-gold finish would complement the composition beautifully.
