About the Maker
Erté (Romain de Tirtoff, 1892–1990) was a Russian-born French artist and designer whose sophisticated imagery became synonymous with the Art Deco movement. Working across fashion, illustration, theater, jewelry and sculpture, Erté developed an unmistakable style characterized by elongated figures, dramatic poses, exotic costumes and elegant geometric forms.
About the Item
La Femme à la Panthère is a dramatic polychrome bronze sculpture created in 1980, depicting an elegant female figure standing alongside a reclining panther. The woman holds the animal by a delicate chain leash, creating a composition that combines Erté’s characteristic glamour with themes of exoticism, strength and sensuality. The woman’s body is decorated with an elaborate leopard-patterned treatment, visually connecting her with the panther at her feet.
This example is signed Erté and individually numbered 155/250. It also bears the JM foundry mark for Joel Meisner and RKP INT. CORP. 1980 markings. Measuring approximately 15 inches high × 14 inches wide × 7 inches deep, La Femme à la Panthère is one of Erté’s particularly striking sculptural compositions and a quintessential expression of his celebrated Art Deco aesthetic.
