The author of the model is the belgian sculptor jef lambeaux (1852–1908), a significant figure in belgian monumental sculpture. Lambeaux was known for his extraordinary ability to capture the human body in motion and for his strongly plastic modeling of the surface, which gives the figures dramatic expression and energy. The statue was cast in the brussels foundry of robert debraz, as confirmed by the signature on the pedestal: “rob. Debraz fondeur – rue schmitz 26 brux”. Debraz was one of the well-known belgian bronze casters at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries and collaborated with a number of important sculptors. The base also bears the author's signature "jef lambeaux" and the marking "no 1", which probably refers to the number of the cast or model.
