This proof was printed in only 25 copies, this one numbered 20/25 and signed in pencil in the lower margin, the signature can be read as "Regnart", perhaps Victor Regnart \.\. The artist plays on the contrasts between deeply inked areas (mask, hair, and ribbons) and a very fine use of hatching and engraved lines to model the faces, hands, and fabrics. The rather free and expressive treatment gives the whole an almost photographic presence while retaining the highly graphic character inherent to etching. The composition, particularly close-up, features Columbine in the foreground, her face hidden behind a large black mask, wearing a soft cap and enveloped in a flowing, knotted costume. Behind her appears Pierrot, his face pensive, his cheek resting in his hand. The two figures' poses, their proximity, and the interplay of their glances lend the scene an atmosphere that is at once intimate, theatrical, and slightly melancholic. The engraving is preserved in a particularly charming antique condition, with some foxing and small spots visible on the paper. Restoration or cleaning could be considered to lessen its appearance, but we have deliberately chosen not to intervene in order to preserve its character, patina, and the authenticity of its current presentation.
