Eight beech spindles rise from each seat in four crossing pairs and meet a bowed top rail, which gives the backs their lattice pattern. The chairs stay visually light, so they work well tucked around a table and look just as good from behind.

Each chair has a shaped solid elm seat on turned, tapered and splayed beech legs, with double cross-stick stretchers underneath. The legs are through-tenoned and wedged into the seat, and the joints show as small round end-grain plugs on the top surface. The elm grain differs from seat to seat. The pale beech frames set off the warmer tone of the elm.

All chairs carry the blue Ercol label and the British Standards Kitemark is impressed into the underside of a each seat, reading "B.S. 1960" and "2056". This piece has an attribution mark,
