The backs fan out slightly: two thicker, tapered outer posts and three slim spindles rise to a curved top rail. The three middle spindles don't stop at the seat. They pass through it and drop into a shaped rear stretcher underneath. It's a neat detail that gives the back extra strength and looks good when the chairs are tucked under a table.

the seats are gently dished and full of character. The elm shows knots and small clusters of pippy figure, so no two seats look the same. The splayed, tapered beech legs go right through the seat and are wedged at the top, and you can see the round end-grain plugs on the seat surface. Turned stretchers run across the front and along the sides. The pale beech sits nicely against the warmer elm.

all chairs have a gold roundel label under the seat that reads: "ercol / 391 / made in high wycombe buckinghamshire england 1981". This piece has an attribution mark,
