Perennial Autumn Still Life
There is a particular moment in autumn when flowers seem to no longer belong entirely to the season. Their contours begin to dissolve, colour slowly detaches itself from matter, and what we call “nature” appears suspended somewhere between presence and disappearance.
Perennial Autumn Still Life emerged from this uncertain territory — a place where the flower ceases to be an object and becomes a trace.
At the centre of the painting, a vertical, almost impossible-to-identify floral form rises through layers of colour and fragmented matter. It suggests a bouquet, yet also something more intimate: a fragile body, a memory, perhaps the remains of a garden that exists somewhere between the visible and the imagined. White, blue, violet, burgundy, charcoal and flashes of orange collide and dissolve into one another, creating a surface in which nothing feels completely fixed.
The surrounding atmosphere is built from muted greens, ochres, dusty pinks and translucent earth tones. Small bursts of orange appear like sparks — fragments of life resisting disappearance. Against this restrained, melancholic field, the central form seems to emerge and simultaneously fade away.
For me, this is not a still life in the traditional sense. It is the trace of a still life — an image of something that has already begun to disappear.
The idea of the perennial does not refer here to something that never dies. Rather, it suggests what remains after disappearance: the imprint, the memory, the gesture, the colour left behind. The flower becomes a sign; the sign becomes a trace; the trace becomes memory.
This work is closely connected to my ongoing exploration of the Ontology of the Trace and the Mindscape — a visual territory where painting becomes less an act of representation and more an excavation of what persists beneath representation. Layers, scratches, fragments, accidental marks and translucent passages form a kind of writing before language: a botanical calligraphy whose meaning remains deliberately unresolved.
The patinated gold frame introduces another layer of meaning. It gives the painting the character of an object recovered from an uncertain time — almost an artefact from a garden that may have existed only in memory.
Perennial Autumn Still Life is ultimately a painting about the quiet melancholy of impermanence: the beauty of things that cannot be preserved, yet somehow refuse to disappear completely.
