This oil-on-canvas work depicts a religious subject—the adoration of the shepherds—and demonstrates fine artistic execution. It is housed in an antique (though not original) carved and gilded wooden frame in the louis xvi style. The painting has a vertical orientation and pleasing dimensions and proportions, making it suitable for display in various settings within the home. The artist skillfully depicts numerous figures, each characterized by great expressiveness. A throng of people and angels surrounds the virgin mary—who remains calm, her hands clasped as if in prayer—and the infant jesus, resting on a white cloth in the manger.
a work of great character, ideal for antique dealers, interior decorators, and collectors of antique sacred art. The painting has undergone conservative restoration, including relining, replacement of the stretcher, and some localized retouching (see photos). The canvas shows some signs of age and possesses a beautiful patina; overall, it is in fair condition.
