Matching vintage frames

A wonderfully atmospheric matched pair of vintage Italian oil paintings depicting the canals of Venice, each filled with softly rendered architecture, gondolas and reflections beneath luminous Mediterranean skies.

Clearly conceived as companions, the two paintings share the same intimate scale, palette and romantic Venetian subject matter. Both are original oils on canvas, both are signed, and both retain DeVity studio markings on the reverse.

One scene looks along a quiet Venetian waterway framed by warm ochre and cream architecture, while its companion opens onto another canal animated by gondolas and the distinctive forms of the city beyond. Loose, expressive brushwork and touches of impasto give the small canvases considerably more presence than their dimensions might suggest.

The DeVity Studio

The paintings are associated with the Italian DeVity studio, known for decorative European cityscapes and particularly romantic views of Paris and Venice produced during the mid-20th century.

Both paintings retain DeVity studio markings on the reverse, including the oval STUDIO D’ARTE A. DE VITY / ITALIA mark and related Italian registration markings. These marks document their association with the DeVity studio or workshop.

Because the studio employed workshop production, the markings are presented as evidence of DeVity studio association rather than proof that the paintings were personally executed by Antonio DeVity.

Presentation

The paintings remain together in their matching vintage frames, whose softly limed finish and restrained period character complement the pale architectural tones of the Venetian scenes particularly well.

Their compact scale makes the pair unusually versatile. They can be displayed side by side, stacked vertically, incorporated into a gallery wall or used as small companion paintings on either side of a mirror, cabinet or architectural feature.
