Montes
Pair of Neoclassical Roman Garden Scenes
Mid-20th century
Original oils on canvas
Both signed “Montes” lower right
Matching vintage frames
A striking matched pair of tall, narrow vintage oil paintings depicting romanticized Neoclassical garden scenes filled with monumental sculpture, elegant figures and atmospheric European architecture.
Clearly conceived as companions, the paintings share the same elongated proportions, muted green, cream and ochre palette, architectural framing devices and groups of diminutive figures. Both are signed “Montes” at the lower right and remain presented in matching vintage frames with linen-textured surrounds and restrained gilt detailing.
One composition centers upon an enormous classical garden urn overflowing with flowers and foliage. Raised dramatically above the figures below, the urn rests upon an elaborately decorated pedestal bearing the inscription “ROMA.” A balustrade, distant landscape and elegantly dressed figures give the scene the character of an imagined Roman garden.
Its companion replaces the monumental urn with an equestrian monument rising above classical architecture and strolling figures. Together, the exaggerated scale of the monuments and repeated vertical format give the pair an especially theatrical quality evocative of Grand Tour imagery and romantic European architectural fantasies.
Design Context
The compositions belong to the romantic tradition of mid-century decorative art inspired by Roman gardens, Grand Tour imagery and European architectural fantasy. Their monumental urns, classical statuary, equestrian monument and diminutive figures closely relate to the Roman decorative vocabulary associated with Roderic Montagu (1907–2001), whose designs were commercially reproduced during the mid-20th century. The present paintings are both signed “Montes”; the identity of the painter and any direct relationship to Montagu’s designs have not been established.
Closely related hand-painted versions of the urn composition are also known bearing variant signatures. The present paintings are both signed “Montes.” The identity of the painter and the precise relationship between these oils and Montagu’s designs have not been established, and no attribution to Roderic Montagu is being made.
Period Details
Both canvases are mounted on wooden stretchers bearing impressed ANCO BILT / GLENDALE, N.Y. maker’s marks. The materials, construction and presentation are consistent with mid-20th-century decorative painting, although an exact year has not been established.
Presentation
The paintings retain matching vintage frames combining warm wood tones, broad linen-textured surrounds and narrow gilt accents. Their unusually tall and narrow proportions make them particularly effective displayed together or flanking a mirror, doorway, console, cabinet or larger central artwork.
Each painting measures approximately 34.5 inches tall while only 16 inches wide, giving the pair substantial architectural presence without requiring an exceptionally large wall.
