The substantial wood frame is richly decorated with pierced and relief-carved floral, foliate and geometric motifs. A large openwork floral panel crowns the piece, while additional carved panels flank the mirror and frame the arched shutter doors. The shutters themselves feature slender vertical spindles and can be displayed either open to expose the mirror or closed, transforming the piece into an exceptionally decorative architectural wall panel.
The warm, naturally varied wood surface retains attractive age and patina, with visible joinery and hand-worked details adding to its character. The reverse retains hanging hardware as well as a partially legible stamped maker/export mark.
Pieces of this type derive from the tradition of elaborately carved Indian architectural windows and shutters, particularly those associated with Rajasthan and Northern India. Antique architectural elements were frequently adapted into decorative mirrors for later use. Jardinopia Home And Garden
