Michel-Henry places the viewer on a white-railed terrace overlooking a brilliant shoreline, where tall turquoise-green trees rise through the foreground and flowering branches form a canopy of layered greens, whites and blue-greens. Beyond them, four dark fishing boats rest along the pale beach against an intensely saturated band of cobalt sea. The entire composition is built around light, color and the pleasure of looking outward toward the water. The painting displays the tactile surface that made Michel-Henry’s mature work immediately recognizable. Thick passages of impasto give the flowering trees physical dimension, while broad, confident strokes describe the beach and water. The boats are reduced to rapid, almost calligraphic passages of black and white, their dark reflections anchoring the otherwise radiant palette. Close examination reveals the woven canvas beneath the paint and the artist’s vigorous, layered brushwork. Signed “Michel-Henry” in black at the lower right. Born in Langres, France, Michel-Henry studied at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris and developed his career during the resurgence of French figurative painting following World War II. Rather than embracing the somber palette prevalent in much postwar European art, Michel-Henry became known for paintings devoted to beauty, light and visual optimism. His landscapes, Mediterranean views, marine scenes and celebrated floral compositions are distinguished by glowing color, rhythmic brushwork and a distinctly French sense of elegance. His career brought substantial international recognition, including association with the Maison Descartes in Amsterdam and the Casa de Velázquez in Madrid, the Grand Prix des Jeunes from the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts, extensive participation in the Salon d’Automne and an especially devoted following in Japan. In 1981 he was named Chevalier de la Légion d’Honneur. His paintings also reached an important American collecting audience through prominent galleries including Wally Findlay Galleries. Beach With Boats embodies the qualities for which Michel-Henry became internationally admired: brilliant Mediterranean color, sophisticated compositional balance, vigorous impasto and an unmistakable atmosphere of warmth and optimism. The intimate scale draws the viewer inward while the marine horizon creates a remarkable sense of openness and distance. Presented in a classic giltwood frame with a broad cream fabric surround, narrow gilt inner liner and brass Michel-Henry identification plaque. Measurements on the frame are as follows 18“ x 16“ by 1.5” inches. Actual artwork measures 9“ x 7“. See less

No significant tears, punctures or areas of major paint loss are apparent in the photographs. The cream fabric surround shows slight localized age-related staining and discoloration visible on close inspection. The gilt frame and inner liner display minor surface wear, rubbing and small marks consistent with age. The brass artist plaque shows natural patination. The reverse backing exhibits expected age-related wear, small punctures, abrasions and an inspection opening exposing the reverse of the canvas. Overall, the painting itself remains the visual centerpiece and presents exceptionally well, with the minor condition issues primarily confined to the surrounding presentation. less
