A wonderfully eccentric signed decoupage glass tray by John Derian Company, combining antique equestrian imagery with illustrations of decorative serving pieces.
Two horse studies occupy the upper portion of the composition—a full-bodied golden horse and a separate horse-head study—above an ornate floral covered serving dish and a dramatically scalloped bowl. The images are arranged against a pale green, subtly ruled-paper ground, giving the piece the appearance of pages pulled from an old collector’s scrapbook or reference book.
John Derian is known for drawing from an extensive archive of antique and vintage printed material, recomposing the imagery beneath handblown glass using traditional decoupage techniques. His company was established in New York in 1989, and the work continues to be handmade in the studio. John Derian
The reverse retains its original black felt backing, John Derian Company Inc. “Hand Made in the USA” label, gilt-finished perimeter and John Derian signature.
The unusual combination of equestrian and decorative-arts imagery gives this discontinued design particular appeal for a library, study, collected interior or equestrian setting. Display flat as a decorative tray or vertically as an object of wall art.
