Description
Brunetti
Venetian Canal Scene with Gondolas
Mid-20th century
Oil on canvas
Signed “Brunetti” lower right
Framed approximately 35 × 25 × 3 in.
An atmospheric vintage oil painting of Venice, signed “Brunetti” at the lower right and presented in its substantial bronze-gold and wood-tone frame.
Rather than depicting one of Venice’s more familiar postcard views, the composition centers on a romantic architectural ruin rising from the lagoon. Weathered arches open onto distant buildings and pale blue water, while gondolas, small boats and elegantly dressed figures animate the waterfront. At left, the sweeping sail and curved prow of a gondola create a dramatic counterpoint to the vertical architecture.
The painting is particularly appealing for its palette. Soft aqua, turquoise, cream, pale blue and muted green are punctuated by touches of ochre, black and vermilion. Loose, expressive brushwork and areas of visible impasto give the canvas texture and movement while preserving the dreamlike atmosphere of the scene.
The work is signed “Brunetti” at the lower right. Although the signature is clearly visible, the full identity of the artist has not been established, and no attribution beyond the signed surname is being made.
Period Details
The painting is executed on canvas mounted to a wooden stretcher bearing an impressed ANCO BILT / GLENDALE, N.Y. maker’s mark. Anco Bilt was a New York manufacturer of artists’ stretchers and related supplies. The construction, materials and presentation are consistent with a vintage, mid-20th-century work, although an exact year has not been established.
Presentation
The painting is presented in a substantial vintage frame combining warm wood tones with antiqued bronze-gold and reeded gilt detailing. Multiple stepped moldings give the large composition architectural depth, while the metallic accents complement the ochre and turquoise tones of the painting.
At approximately 35 inches wide, the work has substantial wall presence while remaining relatively lightweight for its size. It is ready for display with hanging wire attached to the reverse.
Condition
Good vintage condition with age-appropriate wear to the painting and frame. The frame shows minor surface and finish wear consistent with age and use. Please review all photographs closely for condition and details.
