The pair consists of a dramatic seated human figure and an extraordinary anthropomorphic feline/jaguar figure, with a large ceremonial collar and pendant.
Both have a wonderful primitive quality, with exaggerated proportions, oversized hands and feet, expressive faces and heavily aged polychrome surfaces in ochre, black and red.
Their imagery appears inspired by the ancient ceramic traditions of Western Mexico, including Nayarit and Jalisco, although these pieces are being offered as vintage Mexican decorative/revival works and not represented as authenticated Pre-Columbian antiquities.
At approximately 45 inches tall, they have tremendous presence and are much larger than most decorative Mexican ceramic figures.
Purchased in Mexico approximately 55 years ago. Wonderful provenance from a long-term private collection.
Condition: Very good vintage condition with substantial surface patina, wear, losses to the painted finish and irregularities consistent with their handmade character and age. Please examine photographs.
