About the Artist
Erte (Romain de Tirtoff, 1892–1990) was a Russian-born French artist and designer whose elegant, highly stylized imagery became synonymous with the Art Deco movement. Working in fashion, illustration, theater, jewelry and sculpture, Erté developed an unmistakable visual language characterized by elongated figures, dramatic poses, luxurious ornamentation and sophisticated sensuality.
About the Item
Prisoner of Love is a striking limited-edition bronze sculpture created in 1980, depicting an elongated female figure dramatically arching away from a classical fluted column crowned by Cupid. A delicate chain tethering the figure to the column gives the sculpture its evocative title and transforms the composition into an allegory of the irresistible bonds of love.
This example is signed Erté on the base and individually numbered 145/250 on the rim. It also bears the JM foundry mark for Joel Meisner and RKP International Corp. © 1980 markings. Measuring approximately 15 inches high × 12.75 inches wide × 6 inches deep, Prisoner of Love is an exceptionally sculptural and visually dramatic example of Erté’s celebrated limited-edition bronzes.
