Striking 1974 surrealist figurative mixed-media work attributed to German artist Peter Buch (b. 1938), signed and inscribed at lower right “Buch, Formentera 74.” This highly detailed composition features an elongated fantastical female figure rendered in intricate pen-and-ink patterning, set against saturated fields of lavender, cobalt blue, orange and ochre. A whimsical purple bird rests above the figure, while surreal facial, eye, animal and organic motifs appear throughout the composition. Buch studied art in Stuttgart and worked for many years between Paris and Spain, settling on Formentera during the period in which this work is dated. His work has been associated with Art Brut and is known for colorful, imaginative figures, archetypal forms and highly personal visual symbolism. The piece appears to be an original mixed-media work on paper, likely incorporating ink with watercolor, gouache and/or similar water-based pigments.
Signed/inscribed “Buch, Formentera 74,” dating the work to 1974. Professionally double-matted and framed in a handsome figured wood frame with glass. A later Hobby Lobby professional framing label is present on the reverse. Overall framed dimensions are approximately 12” W × 18” H; visible artwork approximately 8–9” W × 14–15” H.
Please confirm measurements from photographs prior to purchase. Vintage condition is very good overall. Artwork presents beautifully behind glass. Frame shows minor age-appropriate handling wear. Paper backing on reverse has several small punctures/holes from previous hanging or handling; these are confined to the backing and do not appear to affect the artwork itself. Attribution is based upon the visible Buch signature, the specific “Formentera 74” inscription, period, location and comparison with documented Peter Buch works and signatures. No certificate of authenticity accompanies the work, so it is being described as attributed to Peter Buch rather than formally authenticated.
A wonderful example of 1970s European surrealist / Art Brut-influenced figurative art and an especially evocative piece from Buch’s Formentera period.

Artwork displays well with no obvious major tears or losses visible while framed. Some natural age-related variation to the paper/pigments may be present. Frame has light handling wear.
