The substantial molded glass has a dramatic, almost black-purple appearance in subdued light, while the amethyst coloration and warm metallic copper inclusions become particularly luminous in natural light. The densely distributed copper aventurine creates a richly textured, almost celestial effect throughout the interior of the piece.
The organically scalloped form and impressive 3 lb. 15 oz. weight give this compact 7-inch piece a substantial sculptural presence. Although originally designed as an ashtray, its generous bowl-like form also makes it well suited as a catchall, vide-poche, jewelry dish, or small decorative centerpiece.
The piece was professionally appraised in January 1990 as circa 1950 amethyst glass with copper iridescent flakes, molded in a scalloped form.
