Hand-knotted in wool and natural silk, this 2x8 contemporary runner joins Rug & Kilim’s Block Print collection. The high-low textural field features an all-over floral block print lattice in sophisticated shades of beige, cream, and gray.
On the Design:
Originating over two millennia ago in Rajasthan and Gujarat, Indian woodblock printing stands as one of the world's most enduring artisanal textile traditions. Historically crafted using hand-carved teak wood blocks dipped in natural vegetable dyes, this labor-intensive art form was used to stamp intricate botanical patterns onto fine cottons and silks for royal courts and trade caravans. The Block Print collection draws directly from this rich heritage, translating traditional woodblock motifs into sophisticated pile art. Contemporary weaving techniques reconfigure these historic stamped patterns through a raised high-low relief, adding tactile dimensional depth to a classic repeating motif. The surface catches light dynamically, allowing the pile contrast to accentuate every curve of the floral lattice. This contemporary interpretation bridges centuries of Eastern textile craft with architectural sensibilities, offering a quiet, refined centerpiece designed for discerning collectors of fine textile art.
The field presents an all-over repeating lattice composed of stylized floral rosettes and swirling botanical vines set against a warm beige background. Each floral motif is rendered in raised ivory wool paired with grey-taupe highlights, creating a distinct high-low textural contrast that enhances the spatial rhythm underfoot. Luminous natural silk fibers accent the centers of the rosettes, catching ambient light and providing a subtle sheen that contrasts gracefully against the matte texture of the surrounding wool base. The natural silk highlights lend an elevated visual depth to the botanical details without overwhelming the serene, grounded quality of the carpet. The neutral palette balances soft cream, parchment, beige, and warm taupe, allowing the carpet to adapt effortlessly across diverse interior schemes. Finished with a clean, low-profile borderless edge, this runner serves as a serene, tactile accent for hallway galleries, master suites, and contemporary entry corridors. The accompanying book, The Indian Textile Sourcebook by Avalon Fotheringham, is part of Volumes by Rug & Kilim. The book (SKU - B111) can be acquired independently through our bookstore.
