Hand-knotted in wool and originating circa 1950-1959 from Afghanistan, this 3x6 vintage Gabbeh runner joins Rug & Kilim’s Vintage collection. Showcasing expressive folk storytelling, it depicts two spotted leopards perched in tree branches alongside birds framed by a rich crimson floral border over an abrash taupe field.
On the Design:
Among rural village looms, arboreal pictorials represent a rare and poetic category of mid-century folk textiles where weavers immortalized intimate wilderness encounters and pastoral folklore. Rather than relying on cartoon drafts or repeated workshop formulas, tribal artisans worked intuitively, translating regional legends of forest ecology, sacred trees, and native fauna directly onto the warp threads. In regional symbolism, expansive spreading trees function as vital representations of the tree of life, offering shelter, fruit, and spiritual sanctuary within arid mountain environments. The placement of wild leopards nesting within protective branches compresses centuries of village fable into an enduring piece of floor art, celebrating the delicate harmony between predatory nature and natural refuge. Intact and beautifully preserved, this vintage piece provides serious collectors with an extraordinary visual document of mid-century Afghan folk heritage and spontaneous loom art.
The canvas unfolds around a magnificent, branching brown oak tree that stretches across an un-dyed, abrash-softened taupe-gray wool field. Resting within the outstretched boughs are two counterposed, spotted leopards rendered in luminous ivory wool with crisp dark espresso rosettes, green accent stitching along their collars, and red-ringed eyes that impart an alert, spirited expression. Below the main canopy, stylized red and brown birds flutter between the lower trunks, adding a lively secondary layer of movement to the forest scene. Encircling the entire pictorial view is a saturated crimson-red border detailed with a continuous geometric floral vine in sage green, golden ochre, and deep teal, bounded by a delicate inner saw-tooth guard. This masterly interplay of earthy neutrals, vibrant primary accents, and rich narrative imagery offers interior designers a standout statement piece to introduce historic character, graphic warmth, and conversational art into entryways, gallery halls, or curated modern living rooms.
