Hand-knotted in wool, this 3x5 vintage Gabbeh rug originating circa 1950-1959 joins Rug & Kilim’s Vintage collection. It depicts a grand leopard in profile framed by stylized bird motifs in a deep crimson border on a taupe field.
On the Design:
In nomadic weaving traditions, big cat imagery or leopard Gabbeh holds a celebrated position, historically symbolizing courage, agility, and ancestral protection across pastoral landscapes. Curated with uninhibited folk art spontaneity, Gabbeh pictorials offer a captivating window into the weaver's personal imagination, translating fierce wilderness icons through bold graphic simplification. Rural artisans created these textiles without rigid workshop templates, relying on memory and ancestral symbols to record tribal life, wildlife encounters, and protective guardians. In regional lore, the open textured field reflects the vast expanse of high-altitude habitats, while feline subjects were prized as hearth rugs meant to bestow strength upon the home. The execution preserves the raw, unpretentious spirit of original village looms, transforming functional tribal craft into a monumental piece of abstract folk art that honors centuries of regional weaving heritage.
Centered against an open, abrash-softened taupe-gray field, a grand leopard figure stretches dynamically across the canvas in warm golden-tan wool. Detailed with crisp black rosettes and spots across its body, the creature features a curved tail, expressive facial features, and steady limbs that impart a spirited, living character. Encircling the central scene is a dramatic crimson border filled with a continuous procession of stylized bird motifs in midnight navy and ivory, providing a rich historic frame around the feline form. Bounded by an inner saw-tooth guard and simple selvedge edges, this harmonious interplay of saturated earth tones, playful figurative forms, and generous negative space provides designers with an irresistible accent piece to introduce narrative warmth, historic character, and graphic charm into entryways, private studies, or curated modern living spaces. The accompanying book, Christopher Gibbs: His World by Lucy Moore, is part of Volumes by Rug & Kilim. The book (SKU - B384) can be acquired independently through our bookstore.
