Hand-knotted in wool and originating circa 1950-1959 from Afghanistan, this 4x6 vintage Gabbeh rug joins Rug & Kilim’s Vintage collection. Depicting two face-to-face crimson horses framed by an architectural geometric border against a taupe field, it brings a lively folk-art sensibility and a distinctive narrative character to intimate spaces.
On the Design:
Equine imagery holds a sacred place within Central Asian nomadic culture, where horses have long symbolized freedom, noble companionship, and the vast spirit of the steppes. Moving decisively beyond traditional geometric carpets, mid-century Afghan tribal weavers embraced spontaneous pictorial storytelling, capturing domestic rural life and native wildlife through bold, graphic forms. Rather than adhering to rigid workshop cartoons or commercial templates, the weaver used this piece as a personal canvas, translating local animal lore into a striking visual dialogue. The heavy wool pile and raw fiber character give the figures a sculptural quality, allowing the natural texture of the pile to absorb light and soften the graphic edges. Free from industrial symmetry, this work stands as an authentic historical document of mid-20th-century nomadic textile art, offering collectors a rare glimpse into an unvarnished tribal tradition.
The field unfolds as a symmetrical tribal narrative centered on two confronting horses facing each other against a natural, abrash-rich undyed grey-beige ground. Each horse figure is rendered with expressive movement, featuring deep crimson-red bodies accented by bright green manes, tan hooves, and subtle facial details. Framing the central motif is a wide, dark border filled with geometric stepped-latch hook elements in terracotta, forest green, ochre yellow, and soft cream. The chromatic palette relies on rich natural dyes, contrasting the grounded neutral field against the vibrant red focal figures. Subtle horizontal abrash throughout the undyed field yarns introduces gentle tonal fluctuations across the surface, giving the background a living, atmospheric depth. This work serves as a character-rich focal point for entryways, gallery walls, and curated architectural interiors. The accompanying book, David Netto by David Netto, is part of Volumes by Rug & Kilim. The book (SKU - B295) can be acquired independently through our bookstore.
