About the Artist

Alexis Leyva Machado, internationally known as Kcho, is one of the most recognized contemporary artists. Born on the Isla de Pinos, in 1970, Kcho graduated from Havana's National School of Fine Arts and gained international prominence during the 1990s. His work has been exhibited internationally, including at major museums and biennials, and is immediately recognizable for its recurring imagery of boats, rafts, oars, and improvised vessels. These objects became powerful symbols in Kcho's work, exploring themes of migration, displacement, isolation, and memory.

About the Item

Created in 2018, this impressive large-scale oil on canvas features one of Kcho's most recognizable subjects: a precarious vertical arrangement of stacked boats and vessels, accompanied by small human figures that emphasize the monumental scale of the composition. Rendered in Kcho's distinctive loose, expressive style, the boats appear almost architectural as they rise vertically across the canvas. The imagery reflects the artist's longstanding exploration of the boat as both an everyday object and a potent symbol of journey, migration, survival, and hope. 49” H x 37” W See less
