Hand-knotted in wool and originating circa 1950-1959 from Afghanistan, this 4x6 vintage Gabbeh rug joins Rug & Kilim’s Vintage collection. Celebrating spontaneous folk storytelling, the runner features tiered animal figures and cypress motifs set across an abrash-rich beige field.
On the Design:
Pictorial Gabbeh weaving represents one of the most celebrated expressions of nomadic textile art, where weavers abandoned the rigid templates of urban workshops to capture personal narratives, fauna, and ancestral motifs. Originating among rural looms, these pictorial runners historically served as intimate visual journals, recording daily life, livestock grazing, and nature symbols. The open cream field represents the vast, unpaved landscape of the pastoral steppe, while repeating animal tiers and tree forms symbolize fertility, abundance, and life force. The plush, substantial pile density and natural handle embody the raw, unpretentious handcraftsmanship that defines mid-century Gabbeh creations as enduring folk masterworks.
The field unfolds in a charming vertical procession of stylized animal figures and tree motifs arranged in balanced horizontal registers across an undyed, abrash-softened beige backdrop. Dominating the tiers are paired quadrupeds rendered in alternating shades of forest green, terracotta red, and deep crimson, each adorned with expressive faces, geometric ears, and distinct body markings. Nestled between the animal pairs are stylized cypress trees or tree-of-life motifs in forest green, symbolizing eternal growth and protection. Smaller micro-pictorial elements, including miniature camels and subtle folk symbols in saffron, sky blue, and espresso, dot the base of the field. Lined with a simple selvedge edge, this delightful harmony of saturated earth tones, playful figurative forms, and generous negative space provides designers with an irresistible accent piece to introduce narrative warmth, historic character, and graphic charm into corridors, entryways, or curated modern living spaces. The accompanying book, Oriental Rugs: An Illustrated Lexicon of Motifs, Materials, and Origins by Peter F. Stone, is part of Volumes by Rug & Kilim. The book (SKU - B125) can be acquired independently through our bookstore.
