Hand-knotted in wool and originating circa 1950-1959 from Afghanistan, this 4x6 vintage Gabbeh joins Rug & Kilim’s Vintage collection. The design features a vertical arrangement of geometric diamond medallions and stylized animal motifs against an abrash-rich gray field, framed by an intricate multicolored border.
On the Design:
Gabbeh weaving is distinguished by its expressive use of geometric forms, bold color contrasts, and an intuitive approach to traditional ornament. Unlike more formally structured carpets, many tribal Gabbehs favor simplified motifs and generous areas of open ground, allowing variations in scale and arrangement to become integral to their visual character. Diamond medallions are a recurring feature of this decorative vocabulary, offering a strong geometric framework that can be complemented by smaller, more intricate details. This vintage rug illustrates these characteristics through its vertically aligned medallions, scattered figurative motifs, and elaborate border. The abrash visible across the wool field adds further depth to its surface, while the substantial pile lends the rug a tactile quality characteristic of traditional wool weaving.
Against an abrash-rich gray field, a series of diamond medallions runs vertically through the center, creating a pronounced rhythm of geometric forms. The central medallion is particularly striking, with its dark crimson outline enclosing smaller stepped diamonds in muted teal, warm ochre, and ivory. Above and below it, additional medallions introduce terracotta, soft gold, and muted blue, each distinguished by its own combination of nested shapes and fine geometric detailing. Smaller motifs, including stylized birds and other figurative forms, occupy the spaces between the principal medallions, adding intricate details to the otherwise open ground. The surrounding field allows these varied elements to stand apart, while the abrash lends subtle tonal variation to the gray background. Along the perimeter, a richly detailed multistriped border combines repeating stepped rosettes, sawtooth bands, and smaller geometric accents in charcoal, crimson, teal, and earthy ochre. These details create a visual connection between the central motifs and the outer framing, bringing the varied colors together. The contrast of deep crimson against muted gray, complemented by softer ivory, gold, and teal, gives the rug considerable visual depth. Its balance of prominent geometric forms, delicate ornament, and warm color makes it well suited to entryways, private studies, intimate seating areas, and thoughtfully layered contemporary interiors.
