Hand-knotted in wool and originating circa 1950-1959 from Afghanistan, this 4x5 vintage Gabbeh pictorial rug joins Rug & Kilim’s Vintage collection. It features a striking ivory leopard with dark geometric markings against a saturated crimson field, framed by an intricate geometric border.
On the Design:
Pictorial weaving among traditional Afghan looms represents a unique lineage within tribal art, where weavers moved beyond purely geometric repeats to record natural fauna and symbolic guardianship. Originating in mid-twentieth-century Afghanistan, this Gabbeh piece abandons rigid workshop cartoons in favor of spontaneous folk storytelling, capturing the majestic presence of the high-altitude leopard. Historically regarded across Central Asia as emblems of courage, agility, and spiritual defense, feline depictions in tribal textiles carry a long legacy as prized hearth rugs and prestige displays. The execution showcases the raw integrity of authentic tribal hand-knotting, preserving the organic texture and soft pile hand that distinguish mid-century Gabbeh creations as enduring folk masterworks.
The design centers on an elongated leopard rendered in ivory against a deeply saturated crimson field. Its dark espresso markings form a rhythmic pattern across the body, while subtle blue accents around the eye and facial details, together with a muted tan ear, lend definition to the stylized figure. The sweeping curve of its raised tail introduces a fluid counterpoint to the animal's elongated profile, creating a sense of movement across the otherwise open field. Framing the central imagery is a narrow geometric border composed of repeating ivory rosettes and dark brown motifs, accented by muted terracotta details. A finely patterned outer guard completes the design, providing a defined transition between the central field and the rug's edges. The contrast of crimson, ivory, and dark geometric accents, together with the distinctive animal imagery, gives this vintage Gabbeh a strong graphic presence, making it a characterful addition to entryways, private studies, and thoughtfully composed contemporary interiors. The accompanying book, Axel Vervoordt by Armelle Baron, is part of Volumes by Rug & Kilim. The book (SKU - B115) can be acquired independently through our bookstore.
