An exceptional American Federal mahogany sideboard dating to the late 18th or early 19th century, circa 1790–1810. Measuring an impressive 69 inches long, the sideboard features an elegant serpentine front and beautifully figured mahogany accented by extensive contrasting wood inlay.
Particularly striking are the finely executed floral urn inlays, oval foliate paterae, delicate stringing and dramatic shaded fan-form inlay flanking the central kneehole. The case rests on six slender tapered legs terminating in spade feet and retains handsome brass ring pulls and diamond-form keyhole escutcheons.
The interior and underside reveal traditional cabinetmaking construction, including hand-fitted secondary woods, drawer runners and blocking consistent with substantial age. The piece retains a beautifully mellowed surface with the character and variations expected of a piece more than two centuries old. Hardware and some structural elements may have been repaired or replaced during its long history.
At 69 inches wide, this is a substantial and highly decorative Federal sideboard that would be equally compelling used traditionally in a dining room or repurposed as a console in an entry, living room or library.
