Adam Antes was the son of a simple laborer. from 1905 to 1908, he trained as a sculptor and stonemason, subsequently undertaking the obligatory journeyman's travels. Between 1910 and 1913, he worked as an assistant in the studio of the sculptor Daniel Greiner in Jugenheim. Greiner facilitated his first contacts with the artists of the Mathildenhöhe in Darmstadt. Through a recommendation from Wilhelm Pinder, he gained access to the technical college in Offenbach am Main, after which he attended sculpture courses at the Technical University of Darmstadt. A stay in Munich is documented for 1914, and in Worms for 1918. In 1919, he returned to Darmstadt, where he established his own studio on the Mathildenhöhe. There, in the following years, he worked primarily as a sought-after portrait sculptor and also dedicated himself to the design of a single-wing aircraft he conceived. In 1944, his studio was destroyed by the war, forcing him to relocate first to Monsheim and later back to his birthplace, Worms.
His works can be found today in numerous museums, such as the Hessian State Museum in Darmstadt, the Museum Folkwang in Essen, and the Municipal Art Gallery in Worms. Further works are located in the town hall in Oberhausen, in Essen's Grugapark (Taking Flight Swan), and in numerous private collections.
