Beautifully glazed stoneware mid-century modern table lamp from søholm stentøj, the stoneware factory at rønne on the danish island of bornholm. It is attributed to einar johansen and dates from the 1960s. The lamp keeps its original fitting, restored with a new danish-made lamp holder, and has been newly wired for use in the united states. A plug for any other country can be fitted at no charge. It comes with a new tapered blue shade, also made in denmark, and the listed height includes the shade.
søholm is valued above all for its glazes, and this lamp shows why. The blue-violet moved in the kiln, running from the neck over the shoulder and down the corners across an amber-brown ground. Where it passes over the relief it thins to a pale, feathered blue, while the edges of the ribs keep the amber beneath. A running glaze behaves differently in every firing, so no two examples of this model look quite the same.
the form is restrained. A tall neck tapers upward from a squared body with canted corners, and each face carries a vertical column of stacked, lens-shaped ribs. The ribs give the glaze an edge to break over, so the color changes from one rib to the next and each side of the lamp reads a little differently.
the shade has a removable fabric-covered top. With the top in place, the light falls downward onto the table. With it removed, the lamp casts light upward as well.
the underside is impressed "søholm," "danmark" and "stentøj," the danish word for stoneware, together with the factory mark and the model number 1021. There is no designer's monogram, so the attribution to johansen rests on the model rather than on a signature. Specialist dealers credit model 1021 to him, and a danish dealer has offered another example, in a matte grey glaze, as bearing his ej monogram.
about søholm and einar johansen: søholm was founded in rønne in 1835 and remained in production until 1996, making it one of the longest-lived of bornholm's many potteries. Its stoneware of the 1960s and 1970s, by designers including johansen, maria philippi and noomi backhausen, is the work collectors seek most today. Johansen was born in 1906 and studied painting at the royal danish academy of fine arts in copenhagen. He ran his own pottery before joining søholm in 1958. His designs there return again and again to the idea seen on this lamp: a regular pattern in relief, such as ovals, ribs or incised bands, set beneath a running glaze that breaks over the raised edges.
