One-of-a-kind hand-painted art deco ceramic table lamp expertly converted from a 1928 vase from plateelbakkerij zuid-holland (pzh) in gouda. Paired with a new peacock blue-green dupion silk lampshade, wired with a new brass fittings and a fabric-wrapped cord and plug for use in the u.s. A plug for any other country can be fitted at no charge. The listed height includes the lampshade.
the vase comes from pzh's strongest period. Collectors most prize the factory's boldly colored art deco wares of the 1920s and early 1930s, and this is a rare example. The ground shades from deep cobalt at the foot to a lighter, softer blue across the body. Over it, fan-shaped blossoms in several tones of teal grow from dark, branching stems, drawn with the quick and assured line of japanese brush painting.
the japanese character of the design has a history behind it. For more than two centuries, while japan was closed to the west, the dutch were the only europeans permitted to trade there, from the small island of dejima in nagasaki harbor. When japanese prints, lacquer and porcelain began arriving in europe in quantity in the later nineteenth century, they became a lasting source of ideas for dutch designers. Yozea translates that influence into art deco terms, simplifying a japanese subject into flat, graphic areas of color.
the shade is gorgeous peacock blue-green dupion silk with its natural slub and a shifting sheen.
the underside carries the pzh factory mark, the painted pattern name yozea and the date symbol for 1928. The vase is in excellent condition, with crisp painting and strong color.
about pzh: plateelbakkerij zuid-holland was founded in gouda in 1898 and became one of the most celebrated dutch art potteries of the early twentieth century. It was known for hand-painted decoration that moved from art nouveau into a bold, modern art deco style, often combining stylized plants with strong color and influences from abroad. Its work is a large part of why gouda pottery is so widely collected today. This piece has an attribution mark,
