An intact antique pair of Art Deco table lamps from the Faïenceries de Thulin in Belgium converted from vases. New brass fittings and new wiring with fabric-wrapped cords, and they are set up for U.S. Plugs for any other country can be fitted at no charge. Each comes with a new cream pleated silk shade, and the listed height includes the shade.
The flowing flambé drip glaze is what makes these lamps remarkable. Dark cobalt streams down from the neck and passes through cream and oxblood before deepening into aubergine and chestnut brown. Thulin achieved the effect by pouring enamels of different colors over the top of each piece and letting them run down the body. No two pieces came out of the kiln alike, so the lamps differ in detail while matching in character.
Each earthenware base is impressed underneath with the model number 56 and "Made in Belgium," the way Thulin commonly marked its work in this period. Pairs that have stayed together are increasingly hard to find.
About Faïenceries de Thulin: The factory at Thulin, near Mons in the Belgian province of Hainaut, was founded in 1887 by the industrialist Victor Ducobu-Decaudin. It was reorganized in 1923 as the Société Anonyme des Faïenceries de Thulin. Through the 1920s and 1930s it employed roughly seventy to a hundred workers and sold its wares in Belgium and Paris. Its shapes tended to be bolder than those of rival potteries, and its poured, running glazes are among the most distinctive effects in Belgian Art Deco ceramics. This piece has an attribution mark,
