Watercolor and ink on paper by ermanno metelerkamp, *figures of the forest*. Italy, 1974
origin italy
period 1974
artist ermanno metelerkamp was born in 1898 in malaysia to a dutch father and an indonesian mother, but he chose italy—and specifically the varese area—as his adopted home. He lived for many years in barasso, where he passed away in 1993, leaving an indelible mark on the local art scene and beyond. His painting is a fascinating journey between dream and reality, characterized by a vibrant and intense use of color that even caught the attention of masters such as renato guttuso. As a testament to his artistic merit, one of his paintings, *in the painter’s studio* (1972), is housed in the prestigious permanent collection of the ma*ga museum in gallarate. His legacy lives on, thanks in part to retrospective exhibitions such as the one held at villa san martino in barasso in 2023 to commemorate the thirtieth anniversary of his passing, which brought together significant works from private collections, confirming the enduring interest in his work.
