This is an authentic, exceptionally large early 19th-century sheet tin Betty lamp, complete with its original hand-forged wrought iron hanging arm, twisted pick shaft, and attached iron wick pick. Measuring 14.5 inches in total hanging height with a 3.5-inch diameter pan, this piece represents a noticeably larger, heavy-duty example of early American domestic lighting technology.
Designed to burn grease, lard, or whale oil, the lamp features a classic closed-top reservoir construction with an integrated hinged lid, an angled internal wick trough, and an extended drip-catcher spout. The arched metal upright support transitions into a blacksmith-forged, spiral-twisted iron hook featuring an integrated ring-eye swivel joint. Suspended from the upper link by a original hand-formed multi-link wire chain is the original iron wick pick (picker rod), used by early householders to clear crust from the burning wick and raise it inside the trough.
The sheet tin metal body exhibits deep age-appropriate gray oxidation, dark carbonization around the wick spout and interior reservoir floor, soft surface pitting, and minor structural wear along the folded rim and hinge. The solder joint where the vertical back strap joins the base reservoir exhibits authentic early hand-soldered lead/tin alloy construction. Completely uncleaned and untouched to preserve its original historical surface integrity.
Design Significance & Provenance: A remarkable example of early 19th-century utilitarian design, this large-scale sheet tin and hand-forged iron Betty lamp demonstrates the raw functional beauty of early American domestic artifacts. Originating from the pre-industrial hearthside tradition, the lamp features a crisp geometric silhouette formed from hand-shaped sheet tin balanced by an expressive, hand-twisted wrought iron hanging arm and swivel hook.
Curator's Note: For interior designers seeking authentic Americana and rustic texture, this oversized Betty lamp serves as a striking sculptural wall accent or hearthside vignette piece. Suspended from an exposed timber beam, architectural bracket, or masonry fireplace, its oxidized tin surface and twisted ironwork offer deep tactile contrast and historical grounding for modern farmhouse, primitive, or eclectic transitional interiors.

Authenticity Assessment
This piece demonstrates clear, undisturbed markers of authentic 19th-century fabrication:
Construction & Joinery: The reservoir and arch are formed from hand-rolled sheet tin joined with early hand-applied lead/tin solder joints rather than modern continuous machine welds or spot-welds.
Ironwork: The upper hanger is genuinely hand-forged wrought iron showing irregular hammer marks, a hand-twisted spiral stem, and a blacksmith-punched eyelet hook rather than cast metal or machine-twisted wire.
Chain & Pick: The attached wick pick chain is composed of hand-bent S-link iron wire attached via a worn wire eyelet that displays genuine mechanical friction wear.
Patina & Carbonization: The interior floor and wick spout exhibit dark, hardened carbon/grease residues deeply embedded into the metal surface oxidation, impossible to duplicate convincingly with modern chemical patinating agents.
