During the summer in the village of Maçainhas in Portugal, the thick and long wool of the indigenous churras sheep would be spun, woven, washed, felted, and stretched in an arduous manual process to produce the warm and tactile Cobertor de Papa, or Papa blanket.

A graphic example of Portuguese textile heritage, this wool blanket combines ivory and dark brown stripes with vivid bands of golden yellow, bright red, and grass green. These alternating stripes create a visual rhythm reminiscent of historic striped trade blankets, like the Hudson Bay blanket for example, as they were the colors available from natural sources during those times.

A long and heavy blanket that displays well draped across a sofa, a chair, used as a wool bed throw, or even hung as a large vintage textile wall piece.
