This striking, matched pair of vintage English monumental brass rubbings offers an exceptional, crisp graphic element for dark academia, gothic revival, or classic eclectic interiors. Unlike standard rubbings left on wide sheets of paper, these figures have been meticulously hand-cut along their contours and mounted onto heavy cream backing board, creating a high-contrast, bold architectural silhouette.
The History & Artistry:
Handmade in England, these pieces capture the iconic mid-16th-century tomb effigies of Sir Ralph Verney (d. 1546) and his wife, Lady Elizabeth Verney, from the historic Aldbury Church in Hertfordshire.
Crafted using traditional metallic gold and bronze heelball wax rubbed over matte black art paper, the process beautifully coaxes out the intricate, tactile textures of the original medieval engravings. Sir Ralph is depicted as a Tudor-era knight in highly stylized plate armor featuring his family coat of arms. Lady Elizabeth is elegantly rendered in a traditional gabled headdress, a long heraldic kirtle, and flowing robes accented with detailed geometric patterns and long decorative tassels.
Please note that the width measurements are different in both. Lady Elizabeth is approximately 15x 9inches and the Sir Ralph is approximately 15x 8inches
