A striking 19th-century Spanish Colonial School devotional oil painting depicting The Death, or Transit, of Saint Joseph. The composition portrays Saint Joseph reclining at the center, attended by Christ and the Virgin Mary, while angels and putti gather dramatically above and around the scene.
Painted in a rich palette of deep reds, greens, ochres, and warm earth tones, the work displays the dramatic influence of the Baroque tradition. Two cherubs descend from above carrying a floral wreath, while the surrounding figures create a beautifully layered and expressive religious composition.
Executed in oil on a multi-board wood panel and presented in an antique carved giltwood frame with decorative foliate corner details. The aged gilding and warm patina of the frame beautifully complement the painting's rich coloration and Old World character.
The reverse reveals the traditional multi-board panel construction with historic repairs and patches consistent with the age of the work. Unsigned, with no visible artist's signature.
A wonderful statement piece for a collector of Spanish Colonial art, antique religious paintings, devotional art, or Old World interiors.
