This pair of antique Chinese end tables marries simplicity of form with a touch of traditional craftsmanship. Known as "half tables," these narrow tables can be placed apart as easy side tables or pushed together as a larger surface for taking tea.
The pair dates to the late 19th century, each crafted of northern elm (yumu) with mortise-and-tenon joinery and an even finish of dark brown lacquer. The slender tables have a classic, waisted design with rectangular tabletops, inset legs linked by straight floor stretchers and decorative aprons carved with graceful curves and a beaded edge.
