This small painted cabinet is an antique Chinese storage chest from the mid-19th century, a miniature version of a classic painted wedding cabinet. Crafted of elm to a simple silhouette, the cabinet is decorated along the front with gilt paintings of birds and flowers, surrounded by a border of cloud-like scrollwork.
The double doors are secured with quatrefoil brass hardware and open to reveal two interior shelves and two small drawers. Originally set in vivid contrast to the dark lacquer, the gilt design has faded with time to a subtle shimmer with red lacquer undertones.
