This exceptional Italian game table by Rho Mobili D’Epoca of Cabiate in richly figured burlwood, intricate marquetry, and beautifully balanced proportions come together with the kind of craftsmanship that feels assured rather than showy.

The beautifully figured burlwood tabletop is framed by two concentric bands of intricate inlay, surrounding a remarkable central marquetry scene of a classical figure driving a horse-drawn chariot. Around it is a border of flowers, scrolling vines, and foliage adding another layer of detail. It is decorative without feeling busy encompassing the rare trick of knowing exactly when enough is enough.

The custom-fitted glass top protects the exceptional marquetry while leaving every bit of its detail visible. The table can handle cards, chess, cocktails, conversation, or simply the daily business of being the most interesting thing in the room. The substantial apron gives way to a beautifully proportioned pedestal base with a stepped plinth and elegantly shaped feet. The scale is generous without being imposing, giving the table the presence of an important piece without making the room feel as though it has been taken hostage by it.

This piece is not a table trying to provide a pop of pattern. It is for a room with a point of view where beautiful things are allowed to have a little personality, and where every piece has earned its place. See less
