This is a striking vintage gilt bronze guardian lion sculpture, also known as a Foo Dog or wealth lion. The piece features a large, seated lion with its head turned slightly, resting one paw protectively on a smaller lion cub. Both figures feature intricately chased, textured surfaces: the adult lion has a detailed, curly mane, bulging eyes, an open jaw with visible teeth, and flowing, stylized fur cascading down its back and tail. The cub below mirrors these facial features. The sculpture is finished with a mottled gilt bronze patina, highlighted by significant, vibrant cinnabar red pigment on the manes, tails, and facial accents of both lions. The adult lion's tail is sculpted in an elaborate, stylized flame or cloud form. The piece is substantial, featuring a heavy, weighted body and a rich, aged character. The maker notes it is a scholar's object symbolizing smooth success and good fortune. A highly decorative and collectible piece.

The surface shows wear to the gilding, revealing dark bronze and red underlayers, which adds to its antique character. The intricate chased details on the manes, faces, paws, and cub remain sharp and well-defined. The sculpture is structurally sound and stands stably.
