A wonderfully unusual and whimsical vintage patinated metal sculpture depicting two anthropomorphic mushrooms leaning toward one another as if about to kiss, accompanied by a beautifully modeled snail crawling alongside them.
The sculpture has a distinctly surrealist quality, transforming the stems of the mushrooms into expressive human faces while retaining their organic mushroom caps. The snail is particularly charming and surprisingly detailed, with a textured body, articulated antennae, and carefully modeled spiral shell.
The sculpture is constructed from a patinated copper-alloy metal, likely bronze or brass, with the individual sculptural elements mounted to a rectangular metal base. The dark brown-green patina has areas of natural oxidation and wear consistent with age.
I have carefully examined the piece and have been unable to locate a signature or artist’s mark. Despite this, the quality of the modeling and construction does not suggest an average mass-produced decorative object. It has the character of an artist-designed studio piece or possibly a work produced in a limited edition. I have researched the unusual composition but have so far been unable to identify the sculptor or locate another example.
Because the artist remains unidentified, the sculpture is being priced primarily for its decorative and sculptural value rather than on a specific attribution. Further research may eventually reveal its maker.
A very cool conversation piece for collectors of surrealist art, unusual bronzes, mushrooms, natural history, or whimsical sculpture.
