A wonderfully charming vintage French hand embroidered textile panel, purchased directly from an elderly woman at a market in France … Read more A wonderfully charming vintage French hand embroidered textile panel, purchased directly from an elderly woman at a market in France who told us that her mother had embroidered it.

Originally intended to become a decorative pillow, the piece was never completed and remains an unfinished textile panel, making it a wonderful opportunity for someone to finish the project or creatively repurpose the embroidery.

The central figure is a beautifully dressed woman wearing an extraordinary turquoise blue wide brimmed hat trimmed with tiny pink roses. Her face, curled hair, expressive blue eyes and clothing are surrounded by an exuberant garden of hand embroidered roses, daisies and golden flowers.

The embroidery is remarkably intricate and dimensional. Raised and padded embroidery, satin stitching and dimensional floral work create wonderful texture, particularly in the tightly worked pink and burgundy roses, individual daisy petals, foliage, hat and flowing pink ribbon.

The embroidery is worked on a natural tan woven ground with a hand stitched oval border. The outer edges remain raw and unfinished, exactly as the embroiderer left them.

A lovely surviving piece of one French woman’s needlework, passed from mother to daughter and waiting decades for someone to finally complete her creation.

CONDITION:
Vintage unfinished textile panel in as found condition. Outer perimeter is intentionally unfinished with raw and fraying edges, as shown. There is also a small tear in the embroidered area at the woman’s neck that will need to be repaired. The piece was originally intended to be made into a pillow but was never completed. Please refer closely to photographs for condition.
